JEONJU International Film Festival has introduced innovative films that challenge the format of films and attempt unconventional narratives. Expanded Plus, which inherits that tradition, continues to exhibit this year with physical and formal changes by moving experimental works of contemporary directors from theater screens to non-theatrical spaces.
This year’s exhibition focused on artists who tried to express the invisible in the overflowing images from the popularization of the recording medium. These are works that can be shown but chooses not to be shown, works without the shock of pornographic and explicit images, and works that communicates with its absence. Since these images are often composed and depicted as trivial everyday moments, the question of what is different from SNS videos is sometimes asked. In the past, art was limited to people who possessed equipment and mastered the skill, as in its etymology art. With the development of technology and increased access to devices, now art is created by anyone. This exhibition seeks to find answers to the question of how art is classified and expressed.
The 6 works of Expanded Plus are not clearly visible or shown images, but past images (which may or may not be yesterday or years ago) and traces of absence presented by these images. They display moments that are not properly remembered by modern people, who are focusing on the constantly changed present where many events occur. They express the absence that need constant reminders, and reveal the artist’s attitude toward images and life. Their attitudes of reaching the center with the surrounding image, making the familiar look unfamiliar, and allowing the viewer to reach the invisible are also important elements.
