“Cinema, Liberated and Expressed”
In the last few years, the slogan of Jeonju International Film Festival was "Outlet for Cinematic Expression.'' It reflected Jeonju IFF’s intention to defend freedom of expression against the external environment and to sustain the identity of a film festival. This year's new slogan inserted a comma between “cinema” and “expression.” Making a small change in it, we emphasize cinema and also highlight “Cinema, Liberated and Expressed” rather than expression in cinema, by separating cinema and expression. We expect the various ways and fields of expression will be opened and expanded through the cinema on the foundation of supporting the freedom of expression in cinema.
Jeonju IFF began in 2000 with “digital,” the new keyword at the time, but now it hopes to accommodate various fields that can be expressed through cinema of these days. 20th Jeonju IFF also hopes to create a place of freedom that reconciles programs, exhibitions, festivals, events, experiences and serious thoughts about cinema, moving away from the traditional film form and screening format. The newly added comma is a new path of the 20th Jeonju IFF, which expects the door to the freedom of expression to be opened through cinema.
The official poster for the 20th Jeonju IFF is composed of an illustration that uses “window” as a main motif and metaphor for cinema, the media art that mediates virtuality and reality and a collage of still cuts from projects of Jeonju Cinema Project. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, Jeonju IFF decided to collaborate with Min Jeonghwa to visually express the fundamental question of image aesthetics in the age of new media. Min is an illustrator whose main motifs are window and curtain which can symbolize cinematic media.
A woman’s back over a curtained window is a scene from Damien Manivel’s Children of Isadora. The image reinterprets the meaning of cinematic experience by showing the relationships among dance as a movement, stage, and audience through the window frame. A piece of pottery by Cheon Hanbong on a book of a table is a still image from the Breathing of the Fire by Ko Hee-young. It shows the process of unity between craftsmanship and nature through a page in an endless story.
Based on the illustration of Min Jeonghwa, this year’s trailer shows the scenery of inside and outside of a window, which signifies the technical aesthetics of cinema whose narrative is delivered by a series of frames. The film starts by opening the curtains and depicts the imaginary world of cinema which mediates real and virtual worlds. Wordless pages fluttering in the wind allude to the contemplation of filmmakers.
