Overview

In the midst of political battles, people sang together, hoping for solidarity and a brighter future. The lyrics and syllables people used to chant always seemed to align with the song's ideals, but in reality, it's heading to a blurry past. The Maeng-Kong's cry, however, is not tied to a specific era that people yearned for. Their song simply echoes as their mating call rather than a political statement. The sound "Maeng-Kong-(Croak- Croak-)" howls; could we imagine a space of struggle and solidarity once more?

Review

Construction suddenly stops in an area where a new apartment complex is being built because this site turns out to be a habitat of the boreal digging frog(maeng-kkong). The residents come together and create a task force to save the maeng-kkong. The narrator observes the growing movement and is reminded of protests they’ve seen during their childhood. The images of those who raised their voice, stated their presence and championed issues are cleverly stitched throughout the film. This film reminds us of the significant changes created thanks to protestors who have spoken up, often for their survival. (CHO Hyun-na)
