Review

After receiving a camera from her professor, college student Yoo-young starts to capture everything she can see around her through her lens. At a glance, the featured short records of her summer vacation in Chamber of Light may look like little props for the greater film. However, this is a hedonistic film. It touches on the fundamental pleasure of keeping a film open to the senses that are attuned to the signals gathered from a camera. The main character’s time, which unfolds through elaborate compositions and delicate pacing, overlaps with the process necessary to achieve the created images, or in other words, the steps taken to create a film. Just as the last scene in the film shows us, this process transforms the space surrounding us. Chamber of Light leaves the darkroom and arrives on a white wall filled with countless photos. That’s where the “Chamber of Light”, established by this film, lives. Just as one might heed a friend who suggests travelling by saying, “Summer is the season of setting off for somewhere”, this film is a refreshing travel film that morphs familiar spaces into charming ones.
