The 23rd JEONJU International Film Festival Reveals Its Official Poster Embodying Light and JEONJU!

· A dynamic poster that incorporates JEONJU´s initial "J", and the number “23” for the number of editions

· Various still posters, moving posters, and goods to be introduced

· Reflecting the hope and desire for physical screenings

The 23rd JEONJU International Film Festival (JEONJU IFF, Festival Director LEE Joondong) unveiled its official poster.

The motive for this year’s poster which has an emphasis on dynamicity is a triangle which is the shape that forms when light goes through a projector. Through the triangles as the base structure representing the projector’s light, JEONJU’s initial “J” will be expressed, as well as “23”, the number of festivals held to date.

Ever since 2020, JEONJU IFF has been emphasizing “J” for JEONJU as the main visual concept in its official posters as a means to highlight the city as a brand.

In particular, using a projector’s light as its key visual element attracts attention. To this, JEONJU IFF expresses that it embodies the festival’s hopes and wishes to watch films with the audience. Due to the situation under pandemic for the last 2 years, the festival has gone through a crisis. Because of that, the organizing committee of the JEONJU IFF said, “We now realize what a precious experience it was to be able to collectively watch a film at a film festival.” They added, “Our hope to hold the 23rd JEONJU IFF physically and to share the experience of watching the light fall onto the screen with our audience is expressed through the poster.”

This year’s poster was designed by a multinational team. It includes designer SHIN Dokho who has been collaborating with JEONJU IFF ever since 2015, as well as Berlin-based designers Sam KIM (Korea) and Pawel WOLOWITSCH (Germany).

In addition, the organizing committee plans to carry out a "flexible identity" strategy in which they will subsequently release various additional goods such as still posters, moving posters, and other goods stemming from the official poster. In addition, through a systemized exposure focused on social media platforms, the festival will promote the physical event of the 23rd JEONJU IFF to the film festival communities and the cinephiles around the world.

To this regard, JEONJU IFF’s art director KIM Kwangchul said, “We pursued internationality specifically for this year’s visual design strategy, while our goal was to construct an integrated identity for all of our materials across the board including the official poster, trailer, and banner. In order to achieve this goal, we held in-depth discussions with the design team for the last 6 months on the design development.”

Meanwhile, the 23rd JEONJU IFF is scheduled to be held for 10 days from April 28th (Thursday) to May 7th (Saturday) in and around Jeonju Film Street in Jeonju.

< Art Director’s Message: The 23rd JEONJU International Film Festival’s Identity>

Two inverted triangles in the shape of spreading light came together to form the alphabet "J" for JEONJU, while the triangular shapes going in various directions represent "23," the number of times the JEONJU IFF has held its festival. This is the basic structure of the festival’s identity for the year 2022. "J" is the English initial for JEONJU IFF, and an alphabet character that has been introduced every year through our official posters since 2020.

The triangular figure, which can be seen as a basic module, is the figurative representation of the projected light from a projector onto a space, a device that allowed people to share joys and sorrows ever since the birth of cinema. This is how this year’s official poster was able to fully capture the act of screening a film with a projector. It also holds the hopeful wishes of JEONJU IFF to physically project light onto a screen and to watch films with the people that have gathered from all over the world.

Paradoxically, the pandemic that lasted for the last 2 years allowed us to see how precious of an experience it was to watch films collectively. The official poster is the festival’s response to that, while it also shows how much we long for physical screenings and our gatherings at the theaters.
