CHOI Sooyoung, Vanja KALUÐER?I?, and Albert SERRA Among 14 Jurors to View Films in Competition and for the NETPAC Award at JEONJU IFF!

? Actor CHOI Sooyoung, IFFR festival director Vanja KALUđER?I?, director Albert SERRA, and more were selected from diverse nationalities and expertise.

? Directors based in Korea will review in Jeonju, while those abroad will review films online.

The 22nd JEONJU International Film Festival (JEONJU IFF, Festival Director LEE Joondong) which will start on April 29 with the slogan, “Film Goes On,” selected a total of 14 directors, actors, programmers, critics, and producers from Korea and abroad to participate on the jury for the competition sections and the NETPAC Award.

The jury members at this year’s JEONJU IFF are composed of key film professionals with diverse nationalities and expertise, including rising enthusiastic film professionals, making the group professional and novel. For International Competition: International Film Festival Rotterdam’s festival director Vanja Kaluđer?i?; actor Bae Jongok who has shown us a wide range of performances through her roles in Jealousy Is My Middle Name (2003) to In Between Seasons (2018); Shen Yang who produced Black Coal, Thin Ice (2014) and The Wild Goose Lake (2019) which were invited to the Berlin International Film Festival and Cannes Film Festival; director Albert Serra who received the Special Jury Prize for Liberte (2019) which was invited to the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival; and producer Lee Hanna who worked on Hong Sangsoo’s On the Occasion Of Remembering The Turning Gate (2002), Woman Is The Future Of Man (2004) and Lee Changdong’s Secret Sunshine (2007) will view the first or second features from promising new directors.

For the Korean Competition section which will showcase 10 bright Korean films, Park Heungsik, who is the chief director at Jeonju Film Commission and also the helmer of Memories of the Sword (2015), will work with programmer Kiva Reardon of Academy Museum in Los Angeles, and Chiara Maranon, the director of The Girl in the Lemon Factory (2013) and the Director of Content for the streaming platform MUBI, each with their own perspectives.

Selected to review the 25 films in the Korean Competition for Shorts section are: programming director Laura Rohard of the Quebec City Film Festival; director Lee Chunghyun of thriller film Call, starring Park Shinhye and Jun Jongseo; and actor Choi Sooyoung who successfully got into her characters in Miss & Mrs. Cops (2019), NEW YEAR BLUES (2021), and drama Run On (2021), which used the JEONJU IFF as its stage.

Meanwhile, three members will participate as jurors for the NETPAC Award, an award that looks at the Asian film screening out of competition and is presented by the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC). They are Nam Dongchul, the program director of the Busan International Film Festival, critic Byun Sungchan, and professor and director Pip Chodorov (Department of Film & Digital Media at Dongguk University), who made the feature documentary, Free Radicals: A History of Experimental Film (2011).

The jury members invited to this year´s JEONJU IFF will visit Jeonju during the festival dates to attend the screenings, but the members who reside abroad will proceed with online screenings instead of making a trip to Jeonju.

The 22nd JEONJU IFF held from April 29 to May 8 will hold its physical offline screenings in the Jeonju Film Street area, while the online screenings will be made available on the OTT platform, wavve (www.wavve.com) which is possible only in Korea.
