Born in 1940, L'viv, Ukraine, via Czech and settled down in Poland. Studied directing in France and started his career as an assistant director for Andrzej Wajda in the early 1960s. His feature debut film, Trzecia Czesc Nocy (1971), was screened at Venice film festival and The Public Woman, which was awarded at Venice and Cesar in 1984, gave him an international fame.
