Yoni Brook and Pacho Velez´s Mr. Yellow Sweatshirt presents New York City in a single-shot (from above) microcosm as an everyman struggles to enter the subway, a droll take on human-versus-machine.
The footage shows a man struggling to enter the ticket gates of the subway. The gesture of this man, whose face we cannot see, symbolizes the hesitation, confusion, and stress caused when his daily work is disturbed. It gives the impression of images taken from CCTV. Is it a metaphor for people struggling to overcome limitations set by the social system? Or is it a satire that shows the confrontation between humans and machines? It is a delightful film that allows us to imagine a variety of contexts in a single shot. [JANG Byungwon]
