Little Soo-ah lives for the time being with her sick grandmother. When her bean flower in the small pot blossoms, Soo-ah will go back to her mom and the mom’s new husband. That’s what mom has promised.
Soo-ah goes to live with her sick grandma after her mother’s remarriage. Her mother promises to come for her when bean flowers bloom so Soo-ah looks after the beans with great care. As in other stories with child protagonists, the inner world is given shape by inferring psychology from action. She misses her mother but must learn to stand on her own two feet. Rather than relying on explanations, the film implies her isolation using controlled lines and action-centered descriptions. [JANG Byungwon]
