After losing her house and husband, rural woman Wang Erhao leads a stranded life. In order to survive, she pretends to be a shaman to rid villagers of evil spirits, and ironically, her deceits often become real.
Erhao, who is treated as a cursed woman, escaped death by a miracle from the fire accident which killed her husband. Surviving Erhao loses words temporarily, is even raped by brother in law. Living with husband´s younger brother, she is treated as an object of ominousness and sexploitation by villagers. She is thought as a witch with special ability after several accidents. She takes advantage of the situation. The director introduces regional dialect and desolate space in his own hometown and describes the changes of a woman who used to be the object of exploitation. Erhao represents the modern woman not giving in to bigotry and touches transcendental point for new direction. The countryfolk who believes in superstition more than rationality, can´t distinguish violence from worship, is the device for drawing the reality of China allegorially. [LEE Sang-yong]
