Soo-hyun and Ji-young, a young couple, are in the sixth year of their cohabitation in Seoul. After Ji-young tells that her periods stopped, Soo-hyun decides to face his families whom he´s been trying to shun.
The First Lap is the second feature by Kim Dae-hwan who showed his potential with End of Winter(2014). Soo-hyun and Ji-young, both contract emplyees, have dated and lived together for six years. When Ji-young shows signs of pregnancy, they visit their parents. The happy family meal at Ji-young’s home ends somewhat coldly. They visit Soo-hyun’s home to celebrate his father’s 60th birthday, but the accumulated bitter feelings ruin it. Like his previous work, Kim focuses on family. The paradox of a family, which is hard to ignore or embrace, continues. The conflict between the families and generations isn’t solved until the end. At the end of a tough journey, however, the family shows a potential to be renewed. To go deep inside the characters, Kim holds the time: each scene is a single shot. It allows us to read between the lines in the flow of time. [JANG Byungwon]
