THE BODY
Park Jinsung, the director of Evil Spirit: VIY, must be one of the most underrated directors in recent years. With the collaboration with Park Jinseok, his younger brother, in both screenwriting and directing, The Body serves a shining example of visual storytelling. Based on The Last Visitor, a short story written by Kim Young-ha, the movie adds an epilogue missing in the original work, blurring the lines between fantasy and reality. In the last day of the year, a director makes an unscheduled visit to the place of Young-sun and Jungsu, who is also involved in filmmaking. They have a cadaver model as a movie prop in their house and it gives out such an ominous feeling when the visitor tells them on his business. The strained atmosphere, composed carols and the landscape of a sandbank create a strange absurdity which even contains a slight sense of humor. Filmmaking is in a way a process of creating a fantasy. The routine of the film-making world, added to the dreamy atmosphere of the New Year’s Eve arouses an inspiration for the life itself.
