Dovlatov charts six days in the life of Sergei Dovlatov, a Russian author who rose to fame posthumously. Russia in the 1980s suffers an iron rule that imposes many restrictions, and Dovlatov despairs of the reality that prevents him from publishing his works. As the film seamlessly blends fantasy and reality, we learn about the author’s poet friend who experiences hardship, and witness his encounter with former lovers. In real life, the author immigrated to the US in the early 1980s. Though he published his work in The New Yorker, he never got to enjoy prestige during his lifetime. Alexey German Jr. looks back on the time when arts and reality couldn’t reconcile happily, and elegantly points to its political significance. Ultimately, he questions the meaning of arts through the life of an artist. [LEE Sang-yong]
