How was ´the cinema´ rid of its primitivity by the innovation of Lumiere brothers? [#i_]Lumiere![_i#] by Thierry Fremaux, the director of the Institute Lumiere and of the Cannes Film Festival, answers that question in detail. It is a collection of Lumiere brothers´ early films restored in the participation of Martin Scorsese, Francois Clerc and others, giving a fantastic journey to the dawn of the Seventh art. But it is not a film collection of a kind. Fremaux in charge of directing and narration presents 98 short films, including [#i_]Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat[_i#](1895), [#i_]Leaving the Lumiere Factory[_i#](1895), [#i_]The Sprinkler Sprinkled[_i#](1895), with voice commentary. In Lumiere´s films with his humorous comments and wide knowledge of early film history, we can understand how the concept of shot, stage, acting, narrative, and genre began. [JANG Byungwon]
