[#i_]Life and Nothing More[_i#], the second film by Antonio Mendez Esparza from Spain, tells the story of an African-American family who has to fight to live together. A mother and a child under trial, it is a mystery why they should stand trial. The film, following the trouble of Regina, the African-American single mother and his 14-year-old son, Andrew, presents a combination of family melodrama and social criticism. “But at the end of the day, are you free, dead, or in jail.” A black teacher in Andrew´s class summarizes Andrew´s situation neatly. [#i_]Life and Nothing More [_i#]pursues the theme of institutionalized racism. Bringing directly the neo-realist method of casting nonprofessional actors, Esparza creates excellent improvised scenes for quiet and intense everyday life. Especially the improvisation of Regina and her partner is impressive. [JANG Byungwon]
