The act of ´seeing´ is important in James Benning´s films. In [#i_]Readers[_i#], Bening expands the range of the historic theme he has been interested in, through the act ´seeing people seeing´. The film focuses on "reading the book", an act usually unnoticed, Clara Mchale Ribot, a student of Cal Arts where Benning is a professor, writer Rachel Kushner, writer and teacher Richard Hebdige, and dancer Simone Forti read their chosen books in it. At the end of each shot in which they are reading, the quotation from each person´s book is presented. While the characters are facing the front, the audience feel like watching a mirror, because they stare at the characters in the frame, sitting still. This film challenging cinematic experience with rhythm of recitation, duration of shot, reflection effect between subject and object. [JANG Byungwon]
