In 1987 Korea, under an oppressive military regime, a 22-year-old college student gets killed during a police interrogation. As per Park Cheowon’s orders, the police try to cremate the body. Prosecutor Choi Hwan, who was on duty on the day of the incident, calls for an autopsy. Yoon Sangsam, a journalist following the case, reports that the death was a result of asphyxiation during torture. The film is both a historical drama and a panorama of history. In the era filled with longing for change, what transform the Korean society are the flames of sacrifices. Director Jang Joon-hwan embraces various perspectives and thus addresses people’s longing for change in a more extensive and fundamental way. As a result, the film becomes a drama that empowers the present time rather than a mere reenaction of the past. [LEE Sang-yong]

Director

JANG Joon-hwan

Born in 1973. In 2003, he made his first feature film Save the Green Plnet!(2003), which won wide acclaim and numerous awards. Following a ten-year wait, he made his second feature film, Hwayi: A Monster Boy(2013). Projects by him, every one of which has been with high anticipation, share a common element: solidly devised characters leading the stories in an unpredictable and engaging direction.
