Based on Akutagawa Ryunosuke´s 『In a Grove』, a short story which inspired [#i_]Akira Kurosawa´s Rashomon[_i#](1950), the film takes place during the times of Tsar Alexander II. A lady-in-waiting tells a metaphysical fairy tale to the Emperor in his bedroom. The people in her story witness violence, and each tell their own version of the incident. The truth gets lost amongst their testimonies. Last year’s winner of the Russian Film Critics Award, this compelling film centers on truth and testimonies, as well as the conflict between words and images. The black and white screen effectively highlights this duplicity. After his debut feature in 1972, Rustam Khamdamov has only produced four more, all of which carry weight and uniqueness unlike other Russian films before them. This film offers insight into the relatively little known master filmmaker. [LEE Sang-yong]
