The first feature film by Andrei Cretulescu, one of the next generation runners of Romanian Nouvelle Vague. A middle-aged man, Alexandru, who lost his wife in a car crash, receives an unexpected visit one day. Sebastian, who had been his wife´s lover for the past five months, leads Alexandru´s life in an unpredictable direction. Charleston has a good command of a cheerful and colorful style compared to the dark vision of contemporary Romanian cinema. Cretulescu abandons the darkness and brings his film to a new level with love, movies, books and music. The narrative becomes more interesting, as the relation of violent Alexandru and delicate Sebastian turns into the comedy. The script having completed for a long time presents the story with insights into life, persuasively analyzing the emotional states of mourning and loss. [JANG Byungwon]
