Based on Ian McEwan’s novel of the same title. A boy refuses to undergo a life-saving blood transfusion for religious reason. The woman judge put in charge of this case must make a legal decision about issues surrounding religion. At the same time, she is a middle-aged woman going through a crisis in her marriage. Therefore, she faces difficulties in both the professional and personal spheres of her life. The clash between social standards and ethics shows just how weak our values and decisions are. Nothing can come before men no matter how strict it may seem. The judge must make a painful decision in order to uphold and protect the law. The impact of her decision on both the young boy and herself leads us to look deeper into the significance of this chaotic drama to men. [LEE Sang-yong]
