When Haruna saves Ichiro from being bullied, he takes her to the riverside and shows her a dead body. Then Kozue turns up who has also discovered the body. The three youngsters begin to form a strange bond through their shared secret. Set in the 1990s, the latest film from Yukisada Isao explores teenage angst and recklessness. It opened the Berlin Panorama this year. Yukisada, known for his variations of stories and genres, unveils the anxiety of the young through a series of gripping events. The almost fin de siecle despair of the youth and the vivid beauty that lies in it emit intense light even in dark scenes. Yukisada’s unique sentiments once again leave a lasting impression as he successfully brings to life the essence of the original manga. This is one of his best works of late. [LEE Sang-yong]
