On March 2nd 1953, a man is dying. A terrible stroke has left him in pain. He is Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin. Moscow in 1953 is not a happy place. There are wiretaps and secret police everywhere. The vigilance of the totalitarian state spreads paranoia across the society. One´s neighbors may be spies and security guards can turn into prisoners. Such unforeseeable circumstances may appear nightmarish but in fact they turn everything into comedy. Stalin orders a recording of a non-existent concert. The overall sentiment is satirical and ironical in this compelling allegory about the bygone era. Hailed as one of the top films from the UK last year, this sophisticated satirical comedy is complimented by the brilliant performance of the cast including Steve Buscemi. It was banned in Russia and a few other countries. [LEE Sang-yong]
