[#i_]The Tree[_i#] is a film with the structure crossing two stories of which one is a story of an old man who takes a long time with a dog to get water and another is of a boy who wanders the wasteland in search of his mother. Under the tree, the old man and the boy meet in the world devastated by war. The boy is cautious about the old man, but the old man seems to already know who he is. The new Portuguese director Andre Gil Mata creates a surreal atmosphere through poetic visual image and narrative with the long take, ambience sound, and graceful camera movement. It is hard to guess time and space, but the majority of scenes shot with sharp contrasts represent the tragedy in Balkan where the director himself has stayed for a long time. The image of dreams and reality presented by symbols and fables reminds us of Bela Tarr. [JANG Byungwon]
