A record of the daily life of women in the Brazilian shantytown of Belo Horizonte. Leid and Andreia spend each day in peril. Andreia dreams of moving to a safer neighborhood, Baronesa, and get away from all the rampant robberies and murders. Despite the desolate situations outside, the two women seek refuge in their daily life, working in a beauty salon and looking after their children. In order to capture their every movement, Juliana Antune spent five years in Belo Horizonte. The film shines with images as powerful and beautiful as their life. This hybrid film shot from a sociological, feminist perspective confuses audiences as to whether it’s a fiction or documentary. Leading a small, all-woman crew, Antune relied solely on her intuition. Not even the brilliant editing distracts us from the film´s essential message. [JANG Byungwon]
