This is an experimental documentary by Yuri Ancarani, a visual artist/filmmaker. In western culture, Aristocrats went hawking to show off their power 4,000 years ago. It is still enjoyed in Arabic culture. The film observes the falconry for 3 years to question its significance. Ancarani follows the Qatari falconers who try to catch birds for the competition. With dramatic composition, the film explores what’s behind their lives. The shot of falconers in Jeeps driving through the vast desert is like an anthropological microcosm. The film with extraordinary visuals shows the surrealistic world of wealthy Qatari princes. By showing falconry and its subconscious, the film examines the ideals, illusions, and desires of a community. The film won the Golden Leopard for Filmmakers of the Present at Locarno International Film Festival. [JANG Byungwon]
