Celestial Body is a first feature film by Alice Rohrwacher, who won the Grand Prize of the Jury at Cannes Films Festival with The Wonders(2014). A thirteen year old Marta moves to the Southern Italy with her mom and sister and is surrounded by priests and domineering people. Will she fight against the world that threatens her? Celestial Body, one of the most naturalistic films, conveys the voices of teenagers. Rohrwacher, a Swiss-born Italian, doesn’t depict Italy like Fellini, Rossellini, or De Sica. She describes the world seen by the girl who fights it. The precise camera move and framing show the director’s talents to embody the characters’ insecurities through the world recreated in the perspective of Marta under physical and psychological changes. The film is evaluated as a fine work that continues the neo-realistic tradition. [JANG Byeugwon]
