A road movie about two Afghanistan men on a dangerous journey passing Pakistan Peshawar to London to find the human life. Director Michael Winterbottom decided to work on this film for he was always interested in Afghanistan refugee in European society even before September 11 terror attacks. The protagonist, Jamal, is a twelve year-old boy who lost his parents at a young age working at a factory. He plans on going 6400km when he finds cousin Enayatullah is being sent to London at his cousin’s wedding. Jamal faces challenges of brokers’ scheme and threats when passing travelers checkpoints. Boundary between reality and fiction, this is Winterbottom’s most representative work that portrays human image in finding hope in the midst of tragedies. The Golden Bear was awarded to In This World in 2003 Berlin International Film Festival. [LEE Sang-yong]
