Exprmntl is ‘experimental’ without vowels except for the first letter. Similar to Oulipo, Exprmntl was an experimental film festival that was held for five times around Christmas and New Years between 1949 and 1974 at an empty seaside casino resort in Knokke-le-Zoute, Belgium. This was almost the only place to meet avant-garde filmmakers and where European avant-garde movement met the American one. Various writers and artists, as well as experimental filmmakers, gathered under the banner of being avant-garde and underground. The documentary depicts what kind of people attended the festival and what was the significance of it by looking at the films that were screened and by following the traces of the festival. It vividly shows how the discussion and gathering of these people raised people’s expectation for new art. [LEE Sang-yong]
