Overview

Under the loving but firm guidance of an old fan turned director and cultural diplomat, the ex-Yugoslavian cult band Laibach becomes the first rock group to perform in the fortress state of North Korea.

    In celebration of Independence Day also known as North Korea’s anniversary of liberation, a Slovenian rock band named Laibach has been invited to perform. slavoj zizek, Slovenian philosopher was one of many who have introduced Laibach band. Once arrived in Pyongyang, Laibach band showed well-defined performances with the help of North Korean schoolgirls. However, the band soon faces challenges with North Korean’s restrictions and censorships. One public official even suggested one of the band members to take off his bandana that represents Hilter and their songs were being exempt due to censorships, yet the band tries to give their best performance. The formality of both documentary and music video, Liberation Day is not only North Korea’s recent cheerful documentary but also draws outsider’s objectified attention closer. [LEE Sang-yong]

Morten TRAAVIK

Bron in 1971. He directed Miss Landmine Angola(2008), Miss Landmine Cambodia(2009), Liberation Day(2016). He is also renowned for a series of controversial collaborations with North Korean artists.

Ugis OLTE

Born in 1981, Latvia. He directed short film (2008), and feature (2016). (2007) and (2015) premiered at last year’s IDFA mid-length competition.
