Start Line documents the journey of Imamura Ayako, the director who was born hearing-impaired, across Japan from Okinawa to Hokkaido. The theme of the film is the communication between her and the people she met in different regions. We can see how difficult it is for the hearing-impaired to communicate with the non-disabled. The director shed tears and falls into despair during the 57-day journey. The camera operator becomes a friend who encourages her continuously.
It´s not common to see the director to be the subject of agony in documentaries. Imamura overlays her pain with the universal pain of the disabled. Things that are a matter of course are dangerous and challenging for the hearing-impaired. Friend’s help is crucial when she falls into despair. The physical and psychological pain won’t let us take our eyes off. [KIM Youngjin]
