Swagger is a beautiful documentary about puberty. This film breaks the tradition style of documentary and expresses in free-form language. The film starts with 11 teenagers who grew up in the very poor parts of the city, Aulnay and Sevran. The kids face and camera and shares their stories. Some are sitting on the stairs and some are leaning against the lockers or walls. They talk about sad and happy moments, family, religion, dreams, and fear. Their voices are shy and filled with despair, expectations, and anger. Despite many hardships, the kids have dreams. They are far from the typical images of ‘kids from the slum.’ Director Olivier Babinet introduces their world by capturing the natural images of kids talking and walking the streets. It is an interesting teenage movie, documentary, musical, and science fiction. [JANG Byungwon]
