Frank Percy Smith is one of the most important directors but also one of the lesser known directors in British film history. Stuart A. Staples made a film devoted to the world of Smith who led the dawn of the early 20th century cinema. The meditative and immersive film revives this pioneer director who has used optical photography and film cameras in ways to capture the secrets of nature. Smith used various equipment and techniques to find and explore hidden areas of nature. Smith´s work looks like an avant-garde experimental film and gives audiovisual inspiration when viewed in modern times. Stewart edited Smith´s original video and imagining Smith´s sensibility added a music score to the original footage. It seems like Smith´s will to ´illuminate the invisible´ has passed on with the support of the British Film Association (BFI). [JANG Byungwon]
