The Untamed is another work of Amat Escalante, awarded for the film Heli(2013) in the Festival De Cannes. The story takes place at a small town in Guanajuato, Mexico, with a woman named Veronica living unhappily with a macho husband, until something strange happens to the couple when they encounter an unexpected creature. The Untamed creates a chaotic background caused by the existence of creatures where the story raises hints to Mexico´s distorted culture regarding marriage and affairs, and compulsory relationships. While there are scenes of extreme violence and obscenity, the films many elements are in harmony such as the unique and compelling subjct matter and the transcendental style. The Untamed was the winner for Best Director at the 73rd Annual Venice International Film Festival. [JANG Byungwon]
