This is the first feature film by Mexican director Natalia Almada a documentarian. Everything Else is inspired by German philosopher Hannah Arendt, who said ´bureaucratic de-humanization is the most vicious form of violence´. Dona Flor is a middle-aged government employee with a mind-numbing life routine. Her dull life leads to an inhospitable disdain towards the citizens at the public office. Instead resolving civil complaint, she oversteps her power and raises the gauge of anger. When Dona loses the only being that she cared for, ironically she is in danger. The film investigates how corruption and oppression by violent power structures affects humans. The strictly controlled style using the persistent take of the handheld camera, repetitive composition makes the depravity of the system theme captivating. [JANG Byungwon]
