This documentary explores the ´disappearances´ around drugs in Mexico. Over the past 5 years, more than 10,000 people have vanished in connection to drugs. Many films share the same topic regarding Mexico´s illegal state of affairs, drug crime, and the impact on the community. Director Everardo Gonzalez believes in the power of evidence and statistics. He produced The Devil’s Freedom using personal investigations about the victims and offenders. Throughout the film, the audience faces people wearing masks talking. Fear creates hatred. Hatred hurts humankind. And this vicious circle is created by victims of the violence and the perpetrators. Finally the film reveals how grief, fear, and uncertainty are bleaching Mexico City. Mask is a powerful symbol. Their division in the real world seems homogeneous by wearing a mask. [JANG Byungwon]
