This is the second feature by Elina Psikou who came to Jeonju International Film Festival 2014 with The Eternal Return of Antonis Paraskevas(2013). To live with his mom, an 11-year-old Misha moves from Russia to Athens during the Olympics. After his dad died two years ago, his mom is living a new life. He has no idea that a father awaits him in Greece. Son of Sofia explores the mental landscape of a teenage boy against adults. Moving to Athens is a life-shaking experience that reshapes his identity. The film looks deeply personal, but it shows the reality of Greece in a fable-like structure. The problems occurring in the public sphere permeates into the private sphere through sports, music, and TV. Elina Psikou shows that we are helpless in expressing and accepting love. However, the boy’s imagination brings changes to the gloomy situation. [JANG Byungwon]
