Jiseok, a Seoul-based stage director, goes to Yeosu to avoid creditors after his work became a total failure. In the maritime park, he meets Mihee, who came from Seoul to open a cafe in Yeosu. Jiseok tells her that he’s here to work on his next production. When he offers to teach her writing, she lets him stay at her guesthouse in return. Donggon, who has strived to win Mihee’s heart, feels threatened to see the two getting close to each other.
The Night View of the Ocean in Yeosu reminds of the scenes from Hong Sang-soo’s films: An intellectual male artist goes to an unfamiliar place, falls for a woman, and competes with another man to win her heart. However, what differentiate this film are the extreme optimism and the positive belief in the good that relationships form. The characters are stupidly kind, but the warm comedy makes us embrace them. [KIM Youngjin]
