An actor/director famous for Shakespeare films in the early and mid 20th century is Laurence Olivier. For the late 20th century, however, it has to be Sir Kenneth Branagh. Branagh is an Irish actor and director who is famous for his love for the works of Shakespeare. He played and directed Hamlet, which is a four-hour-long masterpiece, filled with his ambition. His artistic ambition to reproduce the classics in a faithful and detailed manner and to create a finale to all the precedent Hamlet films dominates the screen. Though Branagh’s Hamlet sets in Russia in the 19th century, the film with multinational cast is more of a universal drama on human desire, if we exclude the cold background representing the presence of death and ghost. Hamlet is a Branagh’s masterwork, and it received multiple nominations for the Academy Awards. (LEE Sang-yong)
