Review

A debut feature of Sotomayor Castillo, one of filmmakers who led the revival of Chilean cinema. The story is based on her short film of a family road trip. The family of four travels from Santiago to a southern coast. Sitting in the backseat, the daughter senses serious mood from her parents. As the tension between them reveals, the real purpose of the journey is exposed. The film describes a complicated portrait of adults from the perspective of teenage girl. Using the sense of helplessness, the director shows emotional differences among the family. The cinematography of Barbara Alvarez who used to work for Lucrecia Martel and the detailed description of emotions are quite impressive. Winner of the Tiger Award at Roterdam 2012. (JANG Byungwon)
