Director Lee Sung-gang , an original Korean animation director, joined animation director Yeon Sangho and made a feature animation. They were inspired by animation films including Snow Queen and classic epic dramas in order to create familiar characters. A peaceful village, where Kai lives, is covered with ice due to Snow Queen Hatan’s magic spell. The village guardian, the spirit of the river, asks Kai to save the spell-bound village, and gives him the marble of soul. Kai, going through hardships, becomes aware of his responsibility. By following the familiar Asian narrative, many scenes resonate Director Lee’s lyricism and emotions. The film is noteworthy and represents a meaningful trial of combining auteurism and popular imagination. (LEE Sang-yong)
