Raise Your Arms and Twist: Documentary of NMB48 documents four-year journey of NMB48. By working together with one another, 48 members of the group have carried out seemingly impossible missions to show their constant development in talents. In this brutal system of competition, each member of the group has one’s own desperate reason to succeed and therefore, endures harsh trainings. As the documentary proceeds, the contrast between the winners and the stragglers can be easily depicted. The girls embracing a sense of loss with a smile are captured in the camera. Unlike other promotional videos, Raise Your Arms and Twist: Documentary of NMB48 candidly depicts the behind-the-stage stories of the girls in the group. In addition to the severe internal competition, the film deals with the various aspects of the giant “fandoms” of the group to give viewers a chance to think about the brutality of competition in the capitalistic society. The film shows the members at official, promotional events and in their everyday lives, and sometimes it is too terrifying to watch. When the members are doing an event where they shake hands with their fans, the overhead shot that portrays the contrast between the popular members with a long waiting line and the members without any fans is quite astonishing.
