Tadao Ando is a distinguished architect who gracefully deals with the materiality of concrete. There have been several documentaries on Tadao Ando’s world of architecture before. Samurai Architect Tadao Ando is different because it dissects the hard-to-summarize originality of Ando by closely examining his personal life. The documentary shows how this ex-boxer without any educational background was able to find a way to draw functionality and artistic values from the underestimated material, concrete, and to make it into an architectural structure. While exploring various sides of his philosophy, the film also depicts his charisma that overwhelms others almost like a dictator. The documentary also shows how Ando who seems rigid like a stone brings softness into his life and his artistic world. As one knows, architecture is both a field of art and a field of business, controlled by a client. How Ando deals with his life implicates the source of his sense of balance that allows him to pursue his own artistic goals while satisfying his clients’ needs. More than anything, his disciplined mindset that keeps him on the top to pursue the best will attract many viewers. (KIM Youngjin)
