Overview

This film is a labyrinthine and epic film that moves between documentary, fiction and fable. A Paul Bowles story combined with observational footage forms a multi-layered excavation into the illusion of cinema itself.

Review

With the complicated title, the film deals with the fight against vicious image. Rivers thought of another world that replaces the actual world. Through a film within a film, he tells two stories. Spanish filmmaker Oliver Laxe appears as a director. The first story is how he casts local people and shoots fictions in Morocco and the other half is the odyssey of suffering after his kidnapping. While exploring the relations between reality and film, the film shows the possibility of creative narrative by using the custom of genre. As the story unfolds in the Western style through the Moroccan desert, it sublimate the scenery to impressive visual style. This is a unique work of Rivers as a film about film as well as an experiment on new way of narrative structure. (JANG Byungwon)
