Review

The film sketches the scenery of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, one of the world’s longest conduits for crude oil. An image explorer, Rappmund creates a cinematic landscape by arranging pure images similar to pictures or photographs. With the images of landscape and slow speed photography, this masterpiece pushes the cinematic expression to the limit. As the camera follows the 800-mile pipeline, the collision of industry and nature, or human and machinery makes a spectacle. In a simple composition, street signposts, geometric pipelines, workers on the machinery, and grand nature create repetitive patterns. In this experimental documentary, pipeline plays an important part. Linearity and continuity of pipe reorganize the landscape and reexamines the topography in a unique way. (JANG Byungwon)
