Commune Seoul is a documentary that shows the 2 different aspects of 21st century capitalism in Seoul. On one side is an intellectual community that dreams of forming a commune. Young humanities scholars learn together through seminars and lectures and hold discussions and debates. They pour over writings by theorists too complex for the average person to perceive and aspire to an awakening through intellectual lectures, yet the power struggle over how this community should be maintained is as fierce as the world outside. As the community members contemplate various ways of using knowledge, the places where they stayed before and the new neighborhood they are in contain the dark, hidden dilapidated landscape of the glamorous city. They are the slums that are being crushed by the shadow of modernization. The camera stares at the two contrasting landscapes that coexist. (KIM Youngjin)

A documentary that deals with two landscapes of capitalist Seoul. On one side is ‘Suyu-neomo’, an intellectual community that dreams of a commune. Behind the redevelopment area that they stayed in briefly is another landscape. It is the slums of Seoul which are crumbling under the shadow of prosperity.
