Review

The director’s third feature completed six years after her previous film Attenberg. In this film, the director observes the results caused by competitive instinct of men within an male exclusive community. In the Aegean sea, six men is boarding on a luxury yacht. During their boring journey, they play a game called Chevalier to decide who is a better man. The game of looking for a chevalier who is both just and brave becomes more competitive. Just as the slogan saying “A buddy film without buddies”, the film satirizes the brutal war of heterosexual men. The odd competition in a limited space shows how quickly trust and friendship break down before personal interests. The film focuses on masculine world, control, taming, stupidity, and mysterious group dynamics. It is a black comedy that harshly jeers the myth of masculinity and its sheer folly. It won best film at
BFI London Film Festival in 2015. (JANG Byungwon)
