Review

This is a surrealistic film that hovers around reality and dreams. Based on the real murder case of Mexico in 2009, the film discarded the sensational aspect of the accident and took an approach of grotesque fantasy. Mexican cult filmmaker Ripstein depicts the story in the way of classic pulp fictions of Louis Bunuel. In this avant-garde black-and-white crime film, main characters are dwarf twin wrestlers and two aged prostitutes. Alberto and Alejandro never take off their masks even before their wives and children. Two prostitutes Adela and Dora plan a robbery in order to find a way out from their harsh life. The film shows the allegory created by the naive and odd imagination. The essence Ripstein’s world exists in the story of two pairs. The film is filled with ghostlike, mysterious mood created by masked wrestlers and bizarre, odd images. (JANG Byungwon)
