Review

Junun is the first documentary of Paul Thomas Anderson. It documents the making of an album in India by Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood, Israeli composer Shye Ben Tzur, and Producer Nigel Godrich, and how they exchanges with local artists. Greenwood has already collaborated with the director when he composed the soundtracks for the films There Will Be Blood, The Master, and Inherent Vice. In this film, Anderson records how musicians from the East and the West share ideas and are united beyond the language barrier. Like Frederick Wiseman’s documentaries, Anderson focuses on music itself, not musicians. He uses a longtake to deliver the impression of a song while it is performed. Past and present, human and nature, and the East and the West meet together in the artistic ensemble. You may say that this is as an Indian version of Buena Vista Social Club by Wim Wenders which showed Afro-Cuban jazz musicians.
