Old Stone is a story about the dilemma facing Chinese society. Lao Shi is a cabbie who causes a car accident. People flock to see what’s happening but no one helps. Instead of waiting
for an ambulance, Lao drives to the hospital. The insurance company refuses to pay him because he fled the scene without documenting it. The victim falls into a coma and Lao is forced to pay for longer term hospital bills as well as the compensation money. Old Stone is the meaning of the protagonist’s name. His way of sticking to principle like an old stone is useless in the face of China’s bureaucratic and heartless society. Everyone he turns to for help cannot get along. Lao’s mental journey is like Travis’ in Taxi Driver and heads for expected disaster following bewilderment, determination, resignation and rage. Johhny Ma’s impressive debut is a satire on China’s emotional indifference. (JANG Byungwon)
