Review

An unemployed poet in debt gets a job transporting cars at the shipyard. Cars with the same covers are lined up and employees are called by numbers. His relationship with his son gets worse and his identity as a writer is threatened. The Yard is a creative adaptation of Kristian Rund’s novel by director Mans Mansson whose previous films include Roland Hassel and Stranded in Canton. The film takes place in Malmo, a Swedish city that became a hub for imported cars after the fall of the Swedish car industry. The Swedish title Yarden is the residence where low income laborers from around the world live. It’s a cold portrait of people losing their existence to survive and an alienated world where labor and culture push each other away. All movements are monitered and all incidents documented in an enclosed community where freedom is a prisoner. (JANG Byungwon)
